Work

From 1965 to 1985, Apagyi Mária worked as a music teacher at the Erkel Ferenc Music School in Komló. In 1985, she and Lantos Ferenc together instituted the Martyn Ferenc Free School of Arts, working under the auspices of the Apáczai Csere János Education Centre (ANK) in Pécs. Since 1985 Apagyi has been Head of the Art School of Apáczai Centre in Pécs, and then, since 1992, Head of the Music Department of the ANK Martyn Ferenc Free School of Arts.

From 1990 to 1994, in Budapest, Apagyi Mária conducted a national and an international course of improvisation in the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music.

From 1993 to 2004, Apagyi Mária was teaching instrumental improvisation and piano in the Institute of Musical Arts within the Faculty of Music and Visual Arts of the University of Pécs, where she, together with Lantos Ferenc, led a tutorial group in complex arts.

From 1968 on, with Lantos Ferenc jointly, Apagyi Mária has worked out a system of teaching music and visual arts in an integrated manner and, in connection with this, introduced her students to a system of teaching improvisation, in which jazz improvisation also plays an important role.

In 1988, she organized the 1st National Improvisation Meeting for Music Schools, which was followed by the 2nd and 3rd Improvisation Meeting in 1996 and 1999, also arranged by her.

In 1998, upon a request by the Ministry of Culture and Education, Apagyi Mária developed the curriculum for 12 years of the IMPROVISATION subject for schools of arts and music, which has been introduced since the scholastic year 1998-99.

Starting from 1977, she has been leading the Pécsvárad Workshop of Arts, from 1979 the Komló Workshop of Arts, until year 1985. From 1975, she has held numerous lectures, demonstrations and postgraduate studies about integrated education of arts, under joint auspices with Lantos Ferenc in the majority of the cases, in various cities of Hungary, as well as abroad. The conducting of numerous improvisation master classes are also linked with the name of Apagyi Mária, as follows:

  • 1984, Debrecen, for teachers of music. The visual programme was headed by Lantos Ferenc
  • 1985 and 1987, Orosháza, summer school organized for pre-eminent students
  • 1986-87, Budapest, for teachers of music, once a month
  • 1986, Warsaw, Chopin Academy of Music
  • 1988, Ungvár, for students of secondary schools specialized in music
  • 1990, Szeged, for students of teachers’ training schools for music
  • 1990-1994, Budapest, Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music
  • 2000-2002, Budapest, teaching of improvisation in the International Piano Master Class held by concert pianist and organist Király Csaba
  • 2003 and 2005, Rome, for the students of the Rome Academy of Music, in the Academy of Hungary in Rome

In addition to the aforementioned activities, Apagyi Mária headed a number of summer schools too:

  • 1997, Tatabánya, International Summer School of Jazz, jointly with Lantos Ferenc
  • 1996-2000, acting as Head of the Complex Artistic Section of ZETA (Association of Music Teachers), jointly with Lantos Ferenc

Since 1991, Apagyi Mária has been appearing regularly, as concert pianist, in chamber music concerts, solo piano and organ concerts.
